Make the Most of Free Amazon Web Services

The best way to think of the free tier to Amazon Web Services is as a stepping-stone. It allows you to get your feet wet with the basic mechanisms of AWS and EC2; to understand Amazon’s handling of virtual machine instances, storage, data, and networking; and to create an item that can eventually be hosted on a full-blown, for-pay AWS instance. It also lets you learn how to manage and constrain AWS usage. If you’re not careful, you may end up paying for your “free” AWS usage after all.

There’s something wonderful about personality tests — the idea that you can put yourself into a category (or categories), just like that, is so relieving and self-satisfying. I’m an introvert and an extrovert! I’m sensitive but strong-minded! This one told me I’m destined to marry rich! (Alright, that’s my horoscope.)

But it really is a cool concept, and while we can understand that these quizzes will not be completely accurate, a lot of them do provide us with some insight into who we are, how we act, what our potential is, and where our ambition might take us. All the analytics tools in the world won’t do a company much good if it doesn’t know what data it has to analyze. Tamr offers a free, downloadable tool designed to help tackle that “dark data” problem.

Dark data generally refers to all the information an organization collects, processes and stores but doesn’t use for analytics or other purposes. It’s often unstructured or qualitative data that’s harder to keep track of than numerical data is, and by research firm IDC’s reckoning, it can account for as much as 90 percent of an organization’s information assets.
