How Illogical: New Skype Bot Lets You Chat With Spock

Microsoft has made no secret of its grand plans for chat bots, and this week it rolled out five new ones for Skype. Surely the most fun is “Spock,” a bot that promises to help you “learn the ways of Vulcan logic.”

Back in April, Microsoft debuted a preview of Skype bots, the artificial intelligence-based helpers it hopes will make it easier for users to get things done. Today, more than 30,000 developers are building bots for Skype, it says.

Technology is changing the way we connect with our family and friends, so it only makes sense that it would also change how we remember them — something Google Street View is facilitating in surprising new ways. 

In recent years, more and more users of Street View have been harnessing the power of the service’s time shift feature, which allows you to move backward and forward in time to sometimes catch loved ones as they were captured by Google’s Street View cameras. 

Google’s street mapping tool offers images of a wide range of locations dating all the way back to 2007. Because of that, some users are taking nearly decade-long trips back in time and discovering images of deceased members of their families as they were photographed at their addresses.  Read more…

New app lets you access Amazon’s Alexa on your iPhone

If you’ve wanted to try out the power of the Amazon Echo and its virtual assistant Alexa but haven’t wanted to shell out $ 180, this new iPhone app is for you.

Called Lexi, the $ 4.99 app (iOS link) uses the Alexa services API in the palm of your hand, no separate device required. The app was first-spotted by The Next Web.

I bought the app and setup was very simple. You authenticate using your Amazon account (don’t worry, you’re not giving your login information to the app) and then access the features by tapping and holding on the screen and speaking, “Lexi, tell me the weather” or “Lexi, read me the news.” Lifting your finger off the screen will allow the app to process your voice requests.
